Go Ahead, Pass the Salt!

For years, experts have told us to eat less salt-but could they be wrong?  A recent Cochrane Library analysis of 167 different studies examined the effect of low-salt diets on blood pressure, cholesterol, and other markers of health and found that too little salt can be dangerous.  Low-salt diets typically contain no more than 1,500-1,600mg of sodium daily.

The study, published in the American Journal of Hypertension, found that among people with hypertension, salt reduction had only a modest effect on blood pressure, but it raised cholesterol and triglycerides-another blood fat that's dangerous when elevated.  And some studies have found that in people with heart failure or type 1 or 2 diabetes, too little salt can be life-threatening.
